Day to Day Itinerary

Here is what our itinerary on the Camino looks like.  Prior to this, we will be spending a week in Paris.  Peggy will solo hike over the Pyrenees and meet me in Pamplona.  I will be in San Sebastian with Christine while she is soloing.  When it is all done, we will all spend a week in Muros, Spain to relax and meet up with my friend from NY, Steve B.


Day-to-Day Itinerary

Day1

We meet at 11:30 am in Pamplona at the main train station. We will then drive to the French town of St. Jean Pied de Port to walk around and discover this lovely and historic place, here we will have the chance to get our first stamp in our Pilgrim's passport. We will then drive to the town of Roncesvalles to participate in the welcome Pilgrims’ mass in the Colegiata of Roncesvalles. That evening we will enjoy a lovely welcome dinner. The next day we start our walk. We will walk a total of 248 kilometers over 14 days.  We also walk the last hundred kilometers in order to obtain the Compostela certificate.

Day2

The Camino begins!
First stage: Roncesvalles - Alto de Erro (18 km / 11.1 mi)

Today's stage will give us the opportunity to discover the beautiful Pyrenean Navarra as we journey through lovely towns and villages along the way. We will see many staples of the Camino such as the Pilgrim's Cross as we exit Roncesvalles, which will mark the start of this great adventure, the huge stones called "Pasos de Roldán" or Roldan's footprints, and the spectacular views of the Erro valley that we can enjoy from the top of "Alto de Erro".
On our way back to the hotel in Pamplona we will stop off to visit the famous "Puente de la Rabia" in Zubirí.

Day3

Cizur Menor - Santa Maria de Eunate (15 km / 9.3 mi)

We will travel to the town of Cizur Menor where our exciting second stage begins. Today's walk will take us through the village of Zariquiegi, where the marvelous Romanesque church of San Andrés stands out. We will also visit Muruzabal and the nearby church of Santa Maria de Eunate also built in a Romanesque style, this church will mark the end of today's stage. Our day comes to an end with a visit in the beautiful town of Puente la Reina, this town houses one of the most stunning Romanesque bridges in all of the Camino.

Day4

Nájera - Santo Domingo de le Calzada (22 km / 13.6 mi)

In the morning we will drive to the historic town of Nájera to begin our third stage. Along our journey we will witness the transition from what is called "Rioja media" with its beautiful vineyards to the "Rioja alta" where the vines give way to never-ending fields of grain. Along the way we will pass through the lovely town of Azofra and its picturesque main street, we will also visit the village of Cirueña and, after a beautiful walk amidst fields of grain, we will reach Santo Domingo de la Calzada, one of the most important cities in the Camino and the end of today's stage. This town owes its existence to the Camino and its impressive Cathedral is a clear example of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture.

Day5

Villafranca Montes de Oca - Ages (16 km / 9.9 mi)

Today's stage will take us through forest paths to important towns like Ages, one of the most important examples of Castilian architecture in the Camino, the village of San Juan de Ortega and Atapuerca, home of one of Spain's most important archeological sites. We will then drive to the majestic city of Burgos where we shall take part in a private guided tour of the city that will reveal the many masterpieces of Gothic art and architecture that adorn the city including, most importantly, its magnificent Cathedral.

Day6

Ruina de San Antón - San Nicolás de Puente Fitero (16 km / 9.9 mi)

We begin today's stage in the ruins of what used to be the convent of San Antón, still standing are two pointed arches that tower above the ruins. From here we continue our walk until we arrive in San Nicolás, finishing point for today. This town, which played a vital role in Castilla's history, houses more than half a dozen cultural interest sites among which the Ex Colegiata de Santa Maria del Manzano, dating from the 4th century and the Santo Domingo parish church from the 16th century, stand out.

After our stage has ended we will drive to the city of León where a very special private tour of the city awaits us. In this tour we will discover many of the cultural treasures this city has to offer and most importantly its awe-inspiring Cathedral.

Day7

Hospital del Órbigo - Astorga (16.3 km / 10.1 mi)

Our seventh stage starts in the legendary town of Hospital de Órbigo where we will cross the "Passo Honroso" bridge, famous for being one of the longest in the Camino and also for being the setting for the story of the Spanish knight Suero de Quiñones. Our journey will take us through many small villages like Villares de Órbigo and Santibáñez de Valdeiglesias until we arrive at our final destination for the day, the fabulous city of Astorga. This city is one of the most important ones in the Camino because it is here that two of the most popular Camino de Santiago routes meet, the French Way and the "Vía de la plata". While in Astorga we cannot miss visiting its Cathedral and the Gaudí-designed Episcopalian Palace.

Day8

Rabanal del Camino - El Acebo (16.8 km / 10.4 mi)

Today we leave the region of León to venture into the region of El Bierzo. We will begin our journey in a small mountain town called Foncebadón and, after a lovely walk; we will reach "La Cruz de Ferro" or the Iron Cross one of the most important spiritual sites in the Camino. We will then continue until we get to the world-famous Pilgrim's Hospital in Manjarín, which is well worth visiting for its uniqueness. Our Camino continues down a hill until we reach the end point of today's stage, the town of "El Acebo" and its beautiful Bercian architecture. After visiting this town we will make our way to the wonderful town of "Molinaseca" home of one of the most picturesque Romanesque-style bridges one can find in the Camino.

Day9

A Fiaba - Alto do Poio (14.6 km / 9 mi)

We will begin our pilgrimage 4 km before reaching the town in O’ Cebreiro, which is the beginning of the Camino de Santiago in Galicia and one of it's highest points at 1300 meters above sea level. Here we will see 'Las Pallozas’ (constructions of stone and hay) presumably of Celtic origin. Stone houses that remind us of the past are also the main constructions of this mountainous area. We will visit the famous Benedictine Church of O'Cebreiro, where the legend of the "Miracle of O'Cebreiro" took place. We will then proceed on our Way until we reach "Alto do Poio" another one of the Camino's highest points and stop right before the steep downhill path that leads to the town of Triacastela.

Day10

Sarria - Portomarín (18.7 km / 11.6 mi) 


The all-important last hundred kilometers begin today. As we journey through this stage we will come across many little villages and towns of which the most interesting are Sarria, Barbadelo, Ferreiros and Portomarín where we can see beautiful monuments such as: The convent of "La Magdalena” originally founded as a Pilgrim's hospital in the 13th century, the church of "Santiago de Barbadelo" famous for its beautiful architecture and uniqueness of its capitals, the Romanesque portico at the church of Ferreiros and the legendary 100 km marker!

Day11

Portomarín - Palas de Rei (24.3 km / 15 mi)

Today's journey will take us through the towns of Portomarín, Ligonde and Vilachá, where we will have the opportunity to see the wonderful view of the Miño river valley right outside Vilachá, the fortified church of St. Nicholas and the famous Romanesque façade of San Pedro's church in Portomarín as well as the church of "Vilar de Donas", considered to be one of the best examples of Romanesque art associated to the Camino.

Day12

Palas de Rei - Melide (15 km / 9.3 mi)

In today's stage we will cross the border that divides the provinces of Lugo and La Coruña through an ancient roman road. Once we get to La Coruña we will be able to enjoy true jewels of the Camino such as the church of "La virgen de las nieves" in the town of Furelos, the Romanesque portico of San Tirso's church in the village of Palas de Rei and the churches of Sancti Spiritus and Santa Maria de Melide in Melide.

Day13

Melide - Salceda (25.3 km / 15.7 mi)

Today's walk will take us through the lovely towns of Arzúa and Castañeda, both very closely linked to the Camino's history. In Arzúa we can see the beautiful chapel of "La Magdalena" built in gothic style and founded in the 14th century. We can also enjoy some of Arzúa's delicious cheese, given denomination of origin.

Day14

Salceda - Lavacolla (18 km / 11.2 mi)

Our journey will take us through the villages of Salceda, A Brea, Santa Irene and A Rua until we finally reach Lavacolla, the place where the purification ritual needed to arrive in Santiago was performed in ancient times.

Day15

Lavacolla - Santiago de Compostela (10 km / 6.2 mi)

On this final stage we will see one of the Camino's most emblematic places: Monte do Gozo (Mount of joy). From here we can enjoy a marvelous panoramic view of Santiago in which we will be able to make out our final destination: Santiago de Compostela's Cathedral. We are scheduled to arrive in Santiago before 12:00 pm, so that those who wish to attend the pilgrim’s mass and perform any pilgrim rituals like hugging the Apostle Santiago can do so. In the evening: We will have a wonderful farewell surprise accompanied by a delicious dinner to celebrate our arrival.
